È stata una nottata davvero lunga quella della 92sima edizione degli Academy Awards, ricca di sorprese e colpi di scena. Probabilmente, la sorpresa più interessante è stata Parasite, l'intrigante pellicola diretta dal regista sud-coreano Bong Joon-ho, che si è portato a casa alcuni degli Oscar più importanti, tra cui Miglior Film, Miglior Film Straniero, Miglior Regista e Miglior Sceneggiatura Originale. Inoltre, Parasite entra nella storia degli Oscar in quanto è l'unica pellicola straniera ad essersi aggiudicata il premio come Miglior Film.
Prevedibile l'Oscar come miglior attore protagonista a Joaquin Phoenix per la sua interpretazione in Joker di Todd Phillips, così come Renée Zellweger, che ha vinto per la sua performance in Judy, il biopic dedicato agli ultimi anni di vita di Judy Garland. Torna a casa quasi a mani vuote uno dei super favoriti di questa edizione, 1917 di Sam Mendes, che vince "solo" tre Oscar - Migliori Effetti Speciali, Miglior Sonoro e Miglior Fotografia. Delusione per The Irishman di Martin Scorsese che, nonostante le sue numerose nomination, non si è aggiudicato neanche un premio.
La serata si è tenuta al Dolby Theatre, anche per questa edizione senza alcun conduttore, ma tra un premio e l'altro, gli spettatori hanno potuto godersi diverse performance, come quella di Sir Elton John (vincitore dell'Oscar per la Miglior Canzone Originale "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" dal film Rocketman) e Eminem.
